Nicolas Tavitian - Fashion Illustrator

2579_55709949590_763809590_1401809_4277411_n.jpg

Fashion Illustrator Nicolas Tavitian kindly agreed to an interview with Style Voyeur and I am honoured to feature this post on the prominent Parisian artist.

It is not only cool because of his outstanding drawings and insight into the world of Paris fashion but also because we have become pals and since 2008 Nicolas has been following Style Voyeur. It's great we finally get to do something together.

The most enjoyable part of this interview was when Nicolas apologised for his English, stating:

"Sorry for the mistakes...I've learnt English by reading Dazed and Confused and Interview :-)"

Name: Nicolas TAVITIAN

Age: Almost 30

Where did you grow up: I grew up in a small French town, the town of Saint-Chamond where I'm definitely considered as an odd chatacter. The odd thing about it is, the reason why I was considered as someone a bit wierd are the same reasons I can be considered as someone a bit interesting in Paris. That place was boring enough to make me draw a lot. It feels strange sometimes going back there but some people I love are still living in the town.

Where do you call home: Paris. But there isn't a precise place. I feel at home where my parents or my friends are. I have been living in Paris for the past 6 years. n763809590_1191511_3152.jpg

magdalena-@-gaultier.jpg

First fashion memory: I was about 7 or 8 and I can still remember very well. I was sat on a sofa with my sister watching a TV show. One of the guests was a new fashion designer considered as someone very provocative in the late 80's. It was Jean-Paul Gaultier. He was speaking a lot, introducing Nana his heavily made up teddy bear to the host. Jean-Paul Gaultier was wearing a pink pleated skirt. Rather than a man spoiling his fun, I'd seen Gaultier as someone very funny. I'd never seen someone like him before.

What do you do: Basically I draw illustrations for magazines.

How long have you been a fashion illustrator: For the past 6 years now.

1givenchy1.jpg(Above) Givenchy Fall 2008 with Australian model Abbey Lee Kershaw leading the way.

How did you get started in the fashion industry and why: I was working for Agnes B as motifs creator for a line of tee-shirts inspired by famous actors. One day Agnes came to me to check my work and she said something like "I like this, I like that. You should be a fashion illustrator for magazines. Make a call to this friend..." She was right. It was obvious. So I spent a week all nights long to meet her friend with something to show..I've never felt really concerned by clothes or fashion items BUT I'd always been very very interested by the pictures, the people and the imagination that is generated by fashion.

Name some of the publications you work for: I work for several magazines and product packages like Agenda, WAD, French Glamour, NYLON, European Elle, Victory, Vanidad, Fake, Neo2 Magazine, Madame Figaro, Dazed and Confused, POP, IBM, Virgin, Barneys and Custo Barcelona.

Anna.jpgNicolas credits this image he took as "Queen of the bees."

Dior.jpg You have pictures with the worlds top models and designers backstage at the Paris shows. How is it that you have come so close to this world by being an illustrator/artist: I go to several shows during each Parisian fashion week thanks to some magazines I work for. During the shows the most important thing to understand is the inspirations of the next season. What you want, what you don't want anymore. It is sometimes very inspiring, sometimes decisive. It's not only about pretty faces and champagne, it's above all about work.

Who is the most fun person to hang out with backstage at the shows: Hmmmm...someone you know very well.

Karl.jpg  Someone confiding in Karl (above)

Natasha, Mariaclara and Magdalena backstage at Givenchy (below)

natasha,magdalena andmariaclara.jpg

Who is your favourite designer: I love Alaia. His clothes are made for seduction and perfectly built. I like Alber Elbaz for Lanvin and Haider Ackermann for his own line. They know how to introduce fragility and emotion to a dress. I love Dries Van Noten for his culturally diverse style. His collections are always very inspired and never turning around one silhouette or fashion item. I think he's more interested in a continuity. He has always worked at not being today's flavour only.

Lanvin.jpg

(Below) another shot taken by Tavitian. The last look on the runway at Alexander McQueen Spring 2010 before his tragic death.

Lee-McQueen.jpgFavourite Model: I like this question, maybe it proves that my love for models is visual through my work. It can seem a bit cliche' but I love Kate Moss. I was 13 when I saw her face for the first time and I can still remember. Claudia Schiffer, Elle McPherson and all these boy bands defined the idea a lot of people had of the human perfection in the 90's. An idea based on the perfect faces and super bodies with big tits and huge biceps. This picture of Kate Moss came immediately to me as a new proposal. She was like an Egon Schiele drawing. First time I saw her in real life it was like watching somebody out of my adolescence.

My interest for fashion pictures has grown through the 'Top Models' era of the 90's. I was fascinated by these girls. Now models are different but very inspiring. Their beauty is more individual which is the reason, I think, their careers are shorter.

I love Mariaclara Boscono, she's very intense, a flood of thoughts and enthusiasm. I also love Sasha Pivovarova and Australian Abbey Lee Kershaw, they are very inspiring.

Lara.jpg(One of my favourite models) Lara Stone backstage

Who do you admire for their style: To me style is not necessarily about well made clothes, cut out in luxurious materials, quite the reverse. I think someone styled well is a woman or man who's able to express their personality, their own tastes with good sense of proportions, colours, details and grey matters.

Style is the ability to express (consciously or not) something abstract, deeply in harmony with your mind and what's part of a current climate.

Some people I admire for their style include: My grand-mother    and     grand-father,     Christopher Walken,  Anita Pallenberg, Greta Garbo, Tilda Swinton,  Laus Kinski, Nina Simone, Steve McQueen,  Muiccia Prada,   Anna Magnani,       Charlotte Gainsbourg,  Patti Smith,   Lauren Hutton,   Leonor Scherrer,   Anthony Hegarty, Lee Radziwill, Louise Nevelson, Louise Bourgeois, Helena Christensen,   Kate Moss,  Simone de Beauvior, Nancy Cunard, Emmanuelle Alt, David Hockney, Franca and Carla Sozzani, Nan Kempner, Melanie Ward,   Marina Abramovic, Venetia Scott,   Eileen Gray,   Anastasa Barbieri...

What is on the horizon for you in your career: I'm working hard on illustrations for a line of cosmetics packages developed by the department store Barneys, in NYC. I'm inspired by the mid 50's and je ne sais quoi of 2011. Fingers Crossed!  5006_98764999590_763809590_1933048_263441_n.jpg

Out of Focus

IMG_9382.JPGBy
jaimeleefont1 - Copy.gifSince Jaime Lee graduated in 2008 from the WA School of Art, Design and Media with an Advanced Diploma in Fashion & Textile Design, I have been working with the designer to help establish her brand.

Last week we shot the campaign for her new full range Spring/Summer 2010/11 collection - 'Out of Focus' - with fabulous fashion photographer, Thom Kerr.

Like myself, Thom is all about supporting talented, forward thinking young designers to help establish themselves within the often harsh and mostly volatile fashion industry. He graciously made the trip from over east to Perth and helped create what I now consider to be the most exciting, awe-inspiring work I have been involved in to date.

Jaime Lee's collection highlights her out-of-this-world aesthetic. Her explosively colourful digitally printed artwork on fabric has been worked to create garments that are
wearable art pieces.

IMG_9343.JPGIMG_9349.JPGThe campaign shoot will be released nationally through various publications, starting in Perth and it is a chance for the public to experience a moment inside the heads of two creative geniuses from Australia.

The day was filmed by Laure Bernard and Gerry LaFerla for BrainChild Productions and we were all interviewed for a piece that will be revealed on screen in months to come.
It was a thoroughly inspiring experience and of course Style Voyeur was there to capture all of the action.

SV presents a behind-the-scenes look at Jaime Lee - Spring/Summer 2010/11 collection.

IMG_9314.JPGThe bathers are to kill for.
Totally on trend for the scuba/surf/underwater inspired high fashion daywear look getting hot for SS 2010/11.
I am obsessed. Think rashies as tops, pop coloured wetsuit shorts or pants worn on the street with stacked heels, sleek accessories and now Jaime Lee's digital prints worn to maximum effect!

This is my favourite piece in the collection- The Big Bird Jacket - worn by the ever so beautiful, Sarah C.
We couldn't have chosen a more perfect model for this campaign!

Look out for stockists of Jaime Lee to be advised soon.

Think First WA

Think First Western Australia!

Style Voyeur was delighted to receive an email by Think First WA urging people to stand up and say something against the bill to restrict the sale of spray paint and markers to people under the age of 18.

eflyer1.jpgOn Tuesday September 15th Western Australia's Legislative Assembley voted to ban the sale of spray paint and markers more than 6mm wide to 'under agers.' This bill will now be debated in the Upper House in a few short days.

If the bill is passed it will mean that no one under the age of 18 will legally be able to buy fabric pens, coloured markers, bold caligraphy pens or spray cans. The bill was created to restrict the purchase of spray paint to reduce graffiti, however there are no exceptions made for educational or employment purposes as there are in other states.

This has got to be one of the most bizarre and extreme measures our state has tried to put on us. I am simply shocked at how obviously it will affect the broader community and the prospect of people under 18 being able to use these tools to further their creative flair for art. The discrimination and demonisation it places on the thousands of legitimate spray paint users in WA is sickening. The restriction which also includes a ban for under 18's of purchasing marking pens is frightening, what next?

Northfolk Basement Fremantle - Saturday - 8/07/09

IMG_8246.JPG
I was invited to attend an exhibition opening in Fremantle tonight and I really had no expectations as to what it would be like. It was excellent! One of the best exhibitions I have been to in a while and the krew were so styling it was as if SV has been missing out not making the trip over to Freo more regularly- who would've thought.

Stand-out artists included Beast Man and Hoi Polloi but everyone's work was really a standard above the normal/same-old art that you sometimes see (in other cities) at hipster events such as these. Tonight at Northfolk Basement I couldn't help feel the similarity to being somewhere like China Heights in Surry Hills, Sydney - only the art was actually good.

The night was really un-expected. On the way in, the taxi driver was asking the inveitable what do you do questions and eventually we got talking about Style Voyeur. After listening to me bang on about SV and WA it turns out that he is one of the hosts at 6PR radio and does an 'out and about' weekly segment on Perth and the happs' around town. So there will now be a story on 6PR radio about SV haha. It will air on Tuesday morning 11th August at 7:30am on 6PR 882.

Below: An instilation where a mechanical devise triggers a bottle to spray paint onto the perspex panels. The paint then drips down onto the wooden canvas while a windscreen wiper-type object swirls the paint around creating the artwork below.

Some pieces that had been prepared earlier were hanging on the walls in the gallery, they were just beautiful and self sufficient taboot.

Up Yours Exhibition + Generation Y Book Launch

0007.jpg
Above: Image Lloyd Stubber

It is not often that I feature other people's photography on SV so when I do it is time to take notice! Lloyd Stubber is an up-and-coming Perth street photographer who's work is very real. To me he captures the essence of what being a young, hip Australian teenager is all about - that just not giving a damn attitude. He has that effortless air that only comes with true creativity. This is not to say that Stubber doesn't care, in-fact he is part of a rare breed of new young contemporary Perth creatives who are doing their own thing and showing the rest of Australia (and the world) that you can create your own destiny.

His work shows his personality like nothing I have ever really seen. It looks effortless, although anyone who has taken a photo in their lives knows that a good image doesn't come easily. It takes a good eye, attention to detail and a whole lot of sass.

Lloyd Stubber's work reminds me of Larry Clark's movie 'Kids' - in a less drug induced Australian sort of way. There is no doubt that when you see Stubber's pictures you get a sense of who he is and the setting of his subject comes alive. It has attitude. Not bad for a boy who is bearly 18. Most of his images are taken from the eyes of an under-ager and whether he is skating with friends, hanging at clubs or running a muck around the city, you get the feeling that Lloyd Stubber is having fun doing his own thing. This boy is carving a career for himself one photo at a time.

Lloyd Stubber is exhibiting his work this Friday evening at 'Up Yours' - Last Chance Studio

and on August 7 he will launch his book - Generation Y again at Last Chance Studio, 456 William Street, Perth.

Calling All Fragile Creatives!

Everyone is always saying there are such limited opportunities for creatives in Perth and the shocking fact of the matter is, it is true!

We have such a huge mecca of creative talent in this town and ironically all our unestablished creatives need is a platform to show the world what they're made of - before success can find them.

Style Voyeur strives to change this conundrum - it is your opportunity for a platform to show the rest of the world your works and give them your hot tip.

SV has unearthed many talented un-established designers and artists who have since gained exclusive stockitsts, had their work published in international fashion magazines and become champions in their own home town.

I am a Stylist, freelance Art Director and Writer by day and Style Voyeur by night (and in any break I can get from this demanding career). I spend my time working with top creatives, making ideas a reality. All day long I look through designers and artists works considering using their pieces for fashion shoots, ad campaigns, dressing high profile perthonalities and contributions to making Perth a creative capital city regonised for it's talents the world over.

Below: Designer Profile on Ruby Mariani in Black Magazine (available in New Zealand, Australia, New York and London).

So follow in the footsteps of someone such as Ruby Mariani who as a result of contacting Style Voyeur has led to her having work featured internationally in Black Magazine (above: soon to be released in Australia) from Thom Kerr and my Pinnacles Shoot (see archives) and send me an email yo! Also look out for Ruby's garments which are soon to be featured in a location shoot in Grazia Magazine.

All you have to do is email me for a chance at your much deserved platform of opportunity.

EMAIL STYLE VOYEUR and show me what you are doing. It doesn't matter who you are or what you're into as long as it is something creative and you want to be a star!

Perth Artist Jodee Knowles hits the big time!

IMG_6760 (2).jpg
Above: Jodee Knowles working on one of her pieces.

Below: Work by the artist.
Medium: Ink on paper.
the heart wants.jpg
2009 is set to be a big year for West Australian Artist Jodee Knowles, with a slew of new projects set to unravel as the year progresses.

Knowles' artwork explores extreme experiences where fear and obsession collide. Her fascination with people's mannerisms, focusing on the negative, manifest to create her works which concentrate on the visual affecting sadness and 'blankness.'  She says 'it is the nothingness within the work that gives it everything.' And it certainly appears that everything she is doing is right! Knowles has recently gained a fan in popstar Pink, with her work appearing in four scenes of the singer's music video 'Please don't leave me.' Exposure such as this, although epic for a girl from Perth, is simply one mark on a long list of triumphs that are currently unfolding for the artist.

Next on the list is her commission to paint the large-scale Western Power/ Artrage building on Roe Street in Northbridge. The wall will host a brand new gallery space for Perth and is going to be part of a launch for the light box exhibitions through Artrage. It is the first project of its kind in W.A. and more information is yet to be released so watch this space.

Over the years Knowles has had her work appear in many group shows, however it is the time in her career for a solo debut. Her solo exhibition will take place in the hip Sydney suburb of Surry Hills in April and she will be opening a new gallery space with her large-scale black and white works as well as displaying an instillation piece for those lucky enough to be attending the event. In true home grown style, Knowles has commissioned a Curtin University student designer to create a small collection of garments which will feature her signature characters on fabric to accompany the work on show. For those who are attending, the resident DJ Solo Andata will be playing the tunes and having recently arrived back from New York after their music was used for the latest Calvin Klein 'Obsession' advertisement, it is clear that the cool attract the cool.

Another knotch on her palette is the recent completion of a portrait for Bryan Adams, who as a result of the experience will be featuring Knowles in his German magazine - Zoo (which is NOTHING like our Australian glossy of the same name.) The issue will be available throughout Germany soon and I am sure you will be able to get your hands on a copy by asking the staff at Borders to kindly order you a copy.

Back home in Perth, high fashion boutique Dilettante, will be using its massive window space to allow local artists to interpret the current collections, of which Knowles will be a part. This project is under wraps until it is on show, however SV got the exclusive that Knowles will be covering the entire boutique floor space in grass and burning her artworks into the surface. Personally, I cannot wait to see what she comes up with.

And if you think by now that you've heard it all, well you'd be mistaken, for Jodee Knowles will be part of a group show that will be taking place in July at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. The Crazy 4 Cult 3-D opening will be on July 16th this year and is the follow-up to the most successful show in Gallery 1988 history - with the brand fast becomming an L.A. art scene phenomenon. For 2008's Crazy 4 Cult 2 exhibition, over 3000 people lined up for the opening reception, spanning almost 3 blocks and selling pieces to the likes of hosts Kevin Smith & Scott Moiser, Pete Wentz & Ashlee Simpson, Jonah Hill, Michael Rappaport and Jason Biggs.

Crazy 4 Cult 3-D exhibition 2009 looks at the artist's inspiration of classic cult films where its characters, icons, vibes and scenes are implemented into each of the artist's own styles. This show is going to be huge for Knowles and Perth should be proud to have her as our own.

Not that she needs it at all - I wish her much success for the future!

I like the idea of rolled-up men's slacks worn as shorts for summer. In theory I wouldn't think this look would be achievable without creasing or the awkward appearance I have experienced when doing my own 'roll-up job' on oversized pieces in the past - however the thin material of these trousers makes it possible.

This is Ruby Mariani the fantastic award winning designer who has been featured on Style Voyeur for her Seduisant et Repousant collection and graduation show at LINEUP Fremantle Prison (see archives).

I adore her style and in particular the bag. I have been searching for a replacement studded handbag for ages as I got my first one out of sheer luck by stumbling into a very un-fashionable store in Bentley about a year ago. Unfortunatley it broke after 3 weeks and most of the studds have fallen off, however I am still using it and will until I can find a suitable new, very similar black leather one with silver, yes silver not gold studds. It is also of the over-the-shoulder variety like Ruby's self made one (pictured).

When you are styling you need a handbag that can go over your shoulders as you cannot be inhibited by it when working and most of the time need to carry everything on you as you are constantly on the go. As you can tell I am jealous of this uber-cool one above. Luckily Superfine have now released some so it is on my to do list to check them out. A handbag line by Ruby is welcomed anytime by Style Voyeur!

I never used to like silver and gold together and am not generally a huge fan of gold (although of course it cannot be denied it has it's place in fashion's history/ future), however gold and silver together can be done and done well. Take Tiffany and Co for example they often release silver and gold pieces and it looks good if not even for the simple attraction of 'opposites' going together. Dani here has wrapped a gold necklace around a long silver chain worn as a bracelet and it works perfectly to go with her badge, ring and shoes (above and below).
