1. How did you go from being a professional surfer to becoming a fashion designer?

I was very young when surfing competitively, my mind took me other places into creative paths.

2. What is your first fashion memory from when you were growing up?

Trying to choke myself with a leather belt when 8 years old, I wanted to wear a mini tuxedo to country barn dance, not the acid wash jeans I was forced to wear.

3. Where did you study?

No formal education...I surfed then went out on a limb.

4. Where do you call home?

Generally where me, my suitcase and my heart lies

5. What is it like being a boy from the most isolated city in the world to now being based on the other side of the world, living in the world's fashion capitals?

I'm between Bali and Europe a lot, spending more and more time in Europe each season. I don't really think of it as a boy from isolation, it feels like I've done my growing up over the past few years so to be there feels quite comfortable.

6. How did you make the transition from Material Boy to Another Boy to Mic Eaton Homme?

They've all served their own individual purposes, Material Boy was the beginning and will always be my baby, Another Boy was something that was too quick, too fast and too much work, Mic Eaton Homme is the new path.

7. What are you working on at the moment?

A short film which I will be screening at Paris Men's week in July, I'm doing a small capsule collection for the Australian Spring/ Summer, I have a pop up shop in Melbourne at 'Don't Come' Gallery throughout May, it's a little bit of a retrospective of my young career. I am also about to start on a collaboration which cannot be spoken of just yet.

8. Where do you show your collections?

Paris.

9. Is there anything you can share with us Perthites that we may not know of that's happening in the fashion world at the moment?

I have a new project in Antwerp, Belgium. "RA" is the name, you will have to find out more yourself. It will be something to keep your eye on in the coming months.

10. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?

Completely based in Europe...married, collaborating with amazing people and to continue  presenting the collections in Paris each season.

11. Who is your style icon?

Mccauley Culkin - effortless and trashy.

13. Tell me a few of your favourite things?

"Planningtorock" album, Material Boy black uni boots, Comme des Garcons purse.

14. Do you have any style advice?

Bed Hair.

15. What music do you like playing when you are working?

Classical or alternative electronic.

16. Which show is the most fun to see every season?

I'm a designer so when a designer shows his collection, other designers are the last people that they are considering, buyers, press and celebs are number one. I do like what Bless do with their presentations, I'm also excited to see what Bernhard Willhelm does with both his women's and men's.

17. What are your favourite collections from the Autumn/Winter 09/10 shows?

Gareth Pugh Femme presentation, Number Nine Homme (sadly their final collection), Comme des Garcons Femme, Giles Deacon.

18. What can't you live without?

Cigarettes.

19. How best would you describe yourself?

Unique.

20. What do you love most about Perth?

Vineyards down south.

Let's play a game....I say a word and you say a word.

Style - Individual

Skatt VIP Launch Party

|
Friday - 14/11/08

A carnival style launch party to celebrate the opening of Western Australia's fourth Skatt salon was held last night at their new premises, 165 Scarbrough Beach Rd, Mt Hawthorn.

Kindly upon enterance to the event I was given the tour by one of the salon staff and was taken aback by the sheer size of the premises, it is massive! They stock a vast range of high end hair and beauty products and offer some of the most talented creative hair, beauty and tanning master minds in the W.A. biz.

Skatt founder and Executive Director Lisa Grinceri is a true W.A. success story, at only 24 years of age she has taken the hairdressing world by storm. Grinceri is not only a delight to be around she is also a celebrated business woman who has recently won the coveted Business Manager of the Year award at the Fellowship for Australian Hairdressing Business and Wholesaler Awards. Kick it!

Wasteland provides the best of the best Perth has on offer!

IMG_2195.JPG

For six weeks now I have been promising backstage model antics so that is exactly what you get yo!

Therese Rawsthorne skirt and high shine top by the same designer. Glasses pictured are by Chloe and bag (shown backwards) is Marc by Marc Jacobs - all kindly provided by Wasteland on King Street (upstairs from the King Street Cafe if you are foolish enough to not already know that ;-) SV still loves you but geez!

I am a bit of a fan of Rawsthorne and remember first reading about her in Russh magazine a while back. From the minute I saw her collection, her name was duelly noted. Being a big supporter of native Australia I was impressed with the statement print she has used throughout her most recent collection (in-fact it is only her second collection thus far) as it quite obviously appears to be indigenous.

This skirt (pictured) is my favourite piece from the entire collection. It is an original print named 'Waratah' by Australian artist Linda Jackson produced in 1985. Rawsthorn approached the artist (who said - obviously impressed -  that it was her first request from a young designer to use one of her works) so Jackson permitted this up and comer to take a pick from her personal archives. The result speaks for itself.

When assisting with styling for this show I was so excited when we picked up the items as I did not expect Rawsthorne to be available in Perth. I am delighted to say that pieces from the designer's Spring/ Summer 2008/ 2009 collection are available - I am assuming, exclusively - at Wasteland.

STM Style Session - Sunday 7/09/08

For this section of the post I decided to only take pictures of 'things'.

IMG_2458.JPG IMG_2455.JPGI am not a fan of good ole' Gwen, however I really like this picture. I must say I do also love the STM - I always look out for Claire Davies' work (stylist for Style Session and STM fashion pages). I especially love Jonathan Cainer's horoscopes! Seriously, I kid you not - that man is an astrological psychic!

More Curtin University design.
Curtin has always been renowned for producing innovative creative designers and this clothing designer - Madeleine Tucker - is no exception. The print-work, cut and presentation of this jacket/trench-coat/dress is original and forward.

Mitch (left) wears Oakley wayfarers and Voltron T-shirt. James (centre) wears revolution hoodie and Omar Seluj sunnies, Streety (right) is wearing Oakley wayfarers, Revival jumper and Converse shoes.

I was on my way to get a mani and pedi with the PFF event co-ordinator (dream on more like it - as if there's time during fashion week for such an indulgence) and instead discovered these boys outside the tent. I took their pic, wrote down what they were wearing and then they asked me where the band was playing. Sometimes I like to think I know everything and so replyed - "There is no band! Or if there is, it has nothing to do with the festival, not that I know of anyway." Mitch (yellow wayfarers) nodded and accepted my answer. I was sitting down resting my feet for a moment and so the conversation continued. After a little while Mitch answered his phone and, sitting right next to him, I couldn't help but hear that he was quite clearly talking to some sort of boss or agent. When he got off the phone we all talked about Perth and fashion for a few minutes, they said they were from Melbourne and then, Mitch, kindly, after about ten minutes, decided to break it to me that they were in-fact THE band. Oops!
Nice work boys.

It should be noted that I am not permitted to give the name of the band as their label - Warner - don't allow it (us bloggers are maybe not chic enough for Warner Music. Either that or they were tricking me again. I choose though, to respect such requests as I am a serious professional ;-), before you consider up-chucking on me however I am sure, with not too much trouble (like I did), you will be able to figure it out all by for yourselves - rather easily - and let me just say, Mitch's t-shirt 'name' is not far off the prize.

The band boys were still around when I took this picture and quite fairly wanted to know what this lady's name was as they just had a feeling it would be something interesting. Not wrong - Angel. A. wears Swarovski crystal necklace, Witchery jacket, Scoop shoes and a hat designed by her friend Alexis. Scarf is from David Jones.

IMG_2441.JPGWhy is it that kids always get the coolest tights designed for them? I am incredibly jealous of this pair worn by Savannah designed by Olily. Dancing shops are usually a pretty good bet for rad tights, John Galliano can be relyed upon and Memory Lane in Mt Lawley also has some cool ones, however nothing rivals the range of interesting tights that kids have available to them. So cute!
