Perth's Up-and-Coming Modelling Sensations

NICcanvas.jpg(above) suit by Carly Hunter.

Chadwick Models have some serious talent on their books.
Recently Thom Kerr (photographer), Rebekah Clark (beauty) and I shot many of Chadwick Models' new talent. All of the girls presented to us were stunning, professional and had fantastic personalities. It was very impressive and a joy working with them all.

Two of the girls, including Nichole H and Beth have been with Chadwick for a brief time whereas models including Shelby, Jessi and Paige were discovered at
Perth Fashion Festival
Chadwick Model Search.

Chadwick Models signed a whopping 24 new faces discovered at the event, proving the standard of models in Perth is so high it is always going to be hard to choose just one winner at any given time.

While all of these girls have huge potential, Nicole H (pictured above and below) is a rare beauty and Thom was so enamoured by the Adriana Lima look-a-like we booked her for a beauty shoot that will appear in a major Australian publication early next year.

Watch this space!

What's In A Name?

|
InStyle Magazine

Shakespeare asked "What's in a name?" Not a lot really unless your name is used in the same sentence as THE SARTORIALIST!

IMG_287122.jpgI happened upon this in the latest edition of InStyle Magazine. I am shooting a fashion story for InStyle in a week (using Burberry SS 2010 just off the London runway no less ;-) so it is a funny coincidence that they have used my name as a heading. In relation to the most famous fashion blogger on the planet though, one does not mind a bit.

Maybe they know of SV, maybe they don't but as the daughter of a hippy
(see here) to me it just says THE UNIVERSE IS LISTENING!

Saturday - 3/10/09

IMG_2391resize.jpgAnyone who knows me well knows that I have a rather eccentric mother. I can appreciate it more now that I'm an adult, however if you're a child at the supermarket packing food into multi-coloured knitted bags (15 years before green bags even existed) then it's hard to not be embarrassed.

My first word was 'sulcies' (baby speak for sultanas), we got carob 'chocolate' on Easter and the first time my brother and I had McDonalds we had to go to hospital because my brother had an asthma attack. His body wasn't used to all the additives.

My mother is a greenie to the core. I find it ironic that nowadays it is almost 'chic' to be pro-green. At Vivienne Westwood's Spring 2010 show guests were greeted with a piece of paper displaying the words 'Act fast, slow down, stop climate change.'  Although for years Westwood has been spreading her anti-consumerist messages, it is only recently that the majority of people no longer point and laugh at recycled shopping bags.

On Saturday my mother got married for the second time and in her true style put on a hippy wedding. The ceremony was held where I grew up, at the family home. Amongst all the madness I managed to get a few snaps that act as a sort of behind-the-scenes to an event in my life.

Ae`lkemi Winter Presentation

Ae`lkemi is one of my favourite Australian designers, the attention to detail input into the label by designer Alvin Fernandez is mind blowing. His creations are truly magnificent.

W.A. is so lucky to have such an amazingly talented creative as its own!

IMG_7819-(2).jpg

IMG_7838.JPG
This is such a great look! I am not often super keen on patterns but this just works and the statement necklace is fabulous.

IMG_7881.JPG
Attention to detail is an understatement.
Sequins and ostrich feathers embellish a gown.

IMG_7802.JPG
The jacket and hair is totally rad. I love how this image looks kind of like an awkward, out of context backstage band shot or something.

(On Ben) Even though the 'flannel' shirt look has almost been around too long, I really like the pigments in this. It is much more original. It says to me relaxed luxury, especially with the metallic denim jeans.

Yes the jeans come in womenswear also. I have had a place cleared in my wardrobe for them since I saw the lookbook a few weeks ago!

The jacket suit Pip is wearing in this shot is to die for. (Above far right and below)

Artist Feature - Jodee Knowles

Perth Artist Jodee Knowles hits the big time!

IMG_6760 (2).jpg
Above: Jodee Knowles working on one of her pieces.

Below: Work by the artist.
Medium: Ink on paper.
the heart wants.jpg
2009 is set to be a big year for West Australian Artist Jodee Knowles, with a slew of new projects set to unravel as the year progresses.

Knowles' artwork explores extreme experiences where fear and obsession collide. Her fascination with people's mannerisms, focusing on the negative, manifest to create her works which concentrate on the visual affecting sadness and 'blankness.'  She says 'it is the nothingness within the work that gives it everything.' And it certainly appears that everything she is doing is right! Knowles has recently gained a fan in popstar Pink, with her work appearing in four scenes of the singer's music video 'Please don't leave me.' Exposure such as this, although epic for a girl from Perth, is simply one mark on a long list of triumphs that are currently unfolding for the artist.

Next on the list is her commission to paint the large-scale Western Power/ Artrage building on Roe Street in Northbridge. The wall will host a brand new gallery space for Perth and is going to be part of a launch for the light box exhibitions through Artrage. It is the first project of its kind in W.A. and more information is yet to be released so watch this space.

Over the years Knowles has had her work appear in many group shows, however it is the time in her career for a solo debut. Her solo exhibition will take place in the hip Sydney suburb of Surry Hills in April and she will be opening a new gallery space with her large-scale black and white works as well as displaying an instillation piece for those lucky enough to be attending the event. In true home grown style, Knowles has commissioned a Curtin University student designer to create a small collection of garments which will feature her signature characters on fabric to accompany the work on show. For those who are attending, the resident DJ Solo Andata will be playing the tunes and having recently arrived back from New York after their music was used for the latest Calvin Klein 'Obsession' advertisement, it is clear that the cool attract the cool.

Another knotch on her palette is the recent completion of a portrait for Bryan Adams, who as a result of the experience will be featuring Knowles in his German magazine - Zoo (which is NOTHING like our Australian glossy of the same name.) The issue will be available throughout Germany soon and I am sure you will be able to get your hands on a copy by asking the staff at Borders to kindly order you a copy.

Back home in Perth, high fashion boutique Dilettante, will be using its massive window space to allow local artists to interpret the current collections, of which Knowles will be a part. This project is under wraps until it is on show, however SV got the exclusive that Knowles will be covering the entire boutique floor space in grass and burning her artworks into the surface. Personally, I cannot wait to see what she comes up with.

And if you think by now that you've heard it all, well you'd be mistaken, for Jodee Knowles will be part of a group show that will be taking place in July at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. The Crazy 4 Cult 3-D opening will be on July 16th this year and is the follow-up to the most successful show in Gallery 1988 history - with the brand fast becomming an L.A. art scene phenomenon. For 2008's Crazy 4 Cult 2 exhibition, over 3000 people lined up for the opening reception, spanning almost 3 blocks and selling pieces to the likes of hosts Kevin Smith & Scott Moiser, Pete Wentz & Ashlee Simpson, Jonah Hill, Michael Rappaport and Jason Biggs.

Crazy 4 Cult 3-D exhibition 2009 looks at the artist's inspiration of classic cult films where its characters, icons, vibes and scenes are implemented into each of the artist's own styles. This show is going to be huge for Knowles and Perth should be proud to have her as our own.

Not that she needs it at all - I wish her much success for the future!

The Collaboration - Pinnacles Shoot

|

IMG_6672.JPG
You may have wondered where SV has been lately?
Well I have been up north, shooting a high end W.A. fashion story, of course!

Amazingly I managed to convince world renowned photographer Thomas Kerr www.thomkerr.com and fashion make-up darling Rebekah Clark to shoot with me in The Pinnacles, W.A.

I sent Thom, who currently resides in New Zealand, my proposal to do a high-end W.A fashion shoot for editorial - to make some beautiful art and highlight some of the amazing talent we have here in W.A. To use items from Ruby Mariani's 'Seduisant et Repousant' collection and show the rest of the world my vision of Western Australia being a respected fashion capital. And to my utter surprise, Thom agreed!!!!

After that W.A. make-up artist Rebekah Clark came on board. Rebekah's work is also renowned internationally and Australia wide, having worked on campaigns for Wheels and Dollbaby, Illonaire and been responsible for making-up none other than 'The Body'. We then found our model in Sarah Pauley from Viviens - she was fantastic and perfect due to her otherworldy look and statuesque figure.

Thanks to Ruby Mariani's awe inspiring collection and her constant inspiration, I styled each look and borrowed pieces from Dilettante, Jewellery designer Max Ball at Purist Gallery, Joynt Venture and Risque Adult Shop (stipper heels that is) and before I knew it Thom had flown over from N.Z.and we were all on a road trip up north.

I will be sure to let you know when the editorial is printed. It is tipped to be exposed in a very high-end, brand-new, Australia-wide magazine later this year - but you will no doubt see them before then also - will keep you posted (literally ;-)

Take a sneak peak here at the behind-the-scenes action.

It was so cool there. If you ever manage to get up this way you should definitely make a stop. It is just before a town called Cataby and is off Brand Hwy.
It has some hilarious 1950's country petrol station memorabilia. The lady who owns it is hilarious also, lovin' it taking the piss out of city people - but in an affectionate way.

Sitting in the air-conditioning was much more appropriate.

I love Rebekah's raw use of make-up. She enhances the natural elements of the model's features allowing them to shine through whilst giving it a tough, yet natural appearance. It was exactly what we were going for with this shoot as we were all exploring the juxtaposition of dark and light, tough and soft, Seduisant et Repousnat (allure and respulsion).
Epic yet beautiful!

Windows on William

|
Wednesday - 29/10/08

As part of the Silver Artrage Festival the William Street Collective brought us Windows on William - an exhibition of window displays from the edgiest boutiques in Perth showcased like you've never seen them before. To go along with all the excitement there was a cute individually designed print to collect from each shop which featured their own chosen local artists work.

Hipsters and Fashionistas alike flocked to William Street for the tastiest fashion street party of the year - hats, heels and mushroom pate included.

I asked Trevor what he loves about Perth and his reply was "Craigie where I grew up". I wondered why he told me to add 6025 as part of his name but eventually I put two and two together (or in this case 60 and 25) and realised that he loves his home town so much that the postcode 'is' part of his name - special thanks to QPZM the online postcode search engine.

For this section of the post I decided to only take pictures of 'things'.

I was on my way to get a mani and pedi with the PFF event co-ordinator (dream on more like it - as if there's time during fashion week for such an indulgence) and instead discovered these boys outside the tent. I took their pic, wrote down what they were wearing and then they asked me where the band was playing. Sometimes I like to think I know everything and so replyed - "There is no band! Or if there is, it has nothing to do with the festival, not that I know of anyway." Mitch (yellow wayfarers) nodded and accepted my answer. I was sitting down resting my feet for a moment and so the conversation continued. After a little while Mitch answered his phone and, sitting right next to him, I couldn't help but hear that he was quite clearly talking to some sort of boss or agent. When he got off the phone we all talked about Perth and fashion for a few minutes, they said they were from Melbourne and then, Mitch, kindly, after about ten minutes, decided to break it to me that they were in-fact THE band. Oops!
Nice work boys.

It should be noted that I am not permitted to give the name of the band as their label - Warner - don't allow it (us bloggers are maybe not chic enough for Warner Music. Either that or they were tricking me again. I choose though, to respect such requests as I am a serious professional ;-), before you consider up-chucking on me however I am sure, with not too much trouble (like I did), you will be able to figure it out all by for yourselves - rather easily - and let me just say, Mitch's t-shirt 'name' is not far off the prize.

Dancing shops are usually a pretty good bet for rad tights, John Galliano can be relyed upon and Memory Lane in Mt Lawley also has some cool ones, however nothing rivals the range of interesting tights that kids have available to them. So cute!
