Depression Chic

Surviving the G.F.C (Global Financial Crisis) in style!

I thought in true GFC style, I would access some old photos from my archives that would otherwise never get to see the light of day and now what a waste that would be!

I have tried to ignore talk of the recession and 'Great Depression' of 2008/09, however everywhere you go now it is rammed in your face. The thing is we are very lucky in W.A. and even through it quite obviously affects everything we as individuals do on a global scale, most certainly the creative industries, it does not affect creativity itself. There are many things in fashion you can do on a budget and although it may at first feel sickening to think of what you may have to sacrifice to pay the rent, it can also be fun to sometimes throw a spanner (or in our case hair brush) into the works.

Here are some of my style tips in surviving the fashion crunch:

  • Borrow from a friend. There is nothing as cheap or fantasic as a fabulously free outfit loaned from a  friend who is just as cool as you. You can experiment with a different look or add a new piece to your already self styled mix. A priceless update to a wardrobe filled with nothing.
  •  Accessorise for FREE!

A recessionista knows how to accessorise in style.
Pick some fresh roses to add a touch of glam to your outfit. Just be sure to give your neighbours a nod and a wave next time you see them or go get planting!!

  • Get your friend to style you in existing clothes you own for a new take on your wardrobe whilst getting ideas on how to spread what you have further.

  • Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on something you're not even sure your friend will like, give the gift of flowers. They smell delightful and put a smile on everyone's dial.

IMG_6621.JPG
  • DIY everything. Make something you can wear for a third of the price it would cost in retail.

While this one seems a bit irrelevant, it is saving of the symbolic kind, for this picture cannot go to waste. It was taken outside Curtin Uni library. You can't see in the image but there was some gnarly bee activity at the time.

  • Jodee Knowles mixes leopard print and aqua seude in a truely ecclectic fashion. Mix and mis-match things you might not normally try.

  • Dolce and Gabana did it and now pjs are HOT for everyday wear. I love this mix of tartan plaid and stripes and we all have a pair of super cute jim jams sitting deep within our closets to re-create this look right?

If not I'm sure a friend will have a pair you can borrow and if that is not the case, then call me :-)

Balthazar -  The Esplanade, Perth - Last I heard was they don't advertise so if you hear about it you are lucky. This is by far the chicest of the restaurant list (if not the best restaurant in Perth) and it is in a league of its own. I just hope the next time I go the waiter doesn't ask if I want to doggy bag my left over truffles.

High Tea

The Perth Mint - 310 Hay St, East Perth (08) 9421 7222 (it will go through to the main number so first ask to speak to the restaurant and then book) - They only do it on week days.

Leaf Tea Merchants - 29 Napoleon St, Cottesloe or 60 Walcott St, Mt Lawley. Only on certain days. They even do a Gluten Free High Tea (upon request) It is to die for!!

C Restuarant - Level 33, 44 St Georges Tce Perth (Between Barrack St & London Court). Again only on certain days. Personally the view and movement makes me quesy, plus I am kind of scared of heights, although after a while (and a few glasses of french champagne) you get used to it. The wierdest thing I found was looking out the window and remembering the view only to look back a moment later and find it is completely different. (Basically you are reminded you are 33 stories high and spinning every few minutes) eek!

Thursday Night is Soup Night

Boucla (349 Rokeby Rd, Subiaco) does a Soup Night on Thursdays that is BYO and has four different types of soups on offer. It gets super busy, packed full of Perth hipsters so the best times to go are either 6:15pm or 7:45pm.

Opening Hours:

Mon - Fri: 7:30am - 5pm

Thursday Night: 6pm - 11pm

Saturday: 8:00am - 3:30pm

Cheap Alcohol

I don't actually do this (as I hate nothing more than Hans Cafe - In my view it is the McDonalds of Asian food), however my friends swear by a quick trip to Hans in Leederville for the cheapest vodka, tonic around - before a big night out.

Hans Cafe - 140 Oxford St, Leederville

Cheap Food

Mr Samurai - 83 Barrack St, Perth (I go here when I am seeking inspiration. Years ago I was one of the only Caucasian's who knew about it and it was (still kind of is) like getting a glimpse into another world). For some reason as soon as I step into this place it feels like I could be in any country on earth. There is a good vibe and most of the food is gluten free.

Butcher & Seafood

Boatshed Fresh Market - 40 Jarred St, Cottesloe

Fruit & Veg

Farmer Jacks - Cnr Bagot & Rokeby Rd, Subiaco

Art Gallery

Purist Gallery - Blue Orchid Court, Yallingup, W.A.

This is my Dad and Step Mum's Art Gallery. It is actually really chic. My step mother's art is very individual and the colours she uses are contemporary, tasteful and bold. The jewellery and objects are designed by my father who is a talented and stylish designer. People from all over the world come to Yallingup to see the gallery which was established in 2002. It has a retro feel and a cute coffee shop where you can grab a coffee or snack in between perusing the works available. The building (which is actually a big shed) was designed and built by my dad (who is also an architect).

www.puristgallery.com

Don't get me wrong, it does seem slightly bias, however I would never put it up if it wasn't worth a look - I'm actually not that nice, especially if being (un) chic is the price :) Haha that rhymed, how vulgar!

Below are a selection of Art Gallery website links provided by my dear friend Senor Solipsist.
