Northfolk Basement Fremantle - Saturday - 8/07/09

IMG_8246.JPG
I was invited to attend an exhibition opening in Fremantle tonight and I really had no expectations as to what it would be like. It was excellent! One of the best exhibitions I have been to in a while and the krew were so styling it was as if SV has been missing out not making the trip over to Freo more regularly- who would've thought.

Stand-out artists included Beast Man and Hoi Polloi but everyone's work was really a standard above the normal/same-old art that you sometimes see (in other cities) at hipster events such as these. Tonight at Northfolk Basement I couldn't help feel the similarity to being somewhere like China Heights in Surry Hills, Sydney - only the art was actually good.

The night was really un-expected. On the way in, the taxi driver was asking the inveitable what do you do questions and eventually we got talking about Style Voyeur. After listening to me bang on about SV and WA it turns out that he is one of the hosts at 6PR radio and does an 'out and about' weekly segment on Perth and the happs' around town. So there will now be a story on 6PR radio about SV haha. It will air on Tuesday morning 11th August at 7:30am on 6PR 882.

Some pieces that had been prepared earlier were hanging on the walls in the gallery, they were just beautiful and self sufficient taboot.

Purist Gallery - Yallingup, W.A.

IMG_5791.JPGAs you may know from SV's Guide to Life post (see archives) my dad and step-mum, Max and Penny, own Purist Gallery in the Margaret River wine region of W.A.

At Purist Max displays his fine art objects and jewellery and Penny her abstract paintings, screen prints and etchings. Purist gifts are also on display and available for purchase.

Purist was designed by my father who is an award winning jeweller with a background in architecture and was built six and a half years ago. Over this time I have been greatly influenced by my parent's design aesthetics and have been lucky enough to be able to give my opinion on various elements of the overall look and feel of the gallery.

Here are some images I have taken during my stay down south over the Christmas break.

For more information visit www.puristgallery.com

Purist Gallery is located in Blue Orchid Court via Lagoon Drive, Yallingup W.A.
Opening hours are every weekend and public holidays 10 - 5 and everyday during December and January 10 - 5.
Ph: (08) 9755 2582

Penny's work can also be found in many collections around the world including The Art Gallery of W.A., The Kerry Stokes Collection, Sir Charles Gardener Hospital, Leeuwin Estate in Margaret River, Clairault Winery, Alexander Library of W.A. and Artbank.

IMG_5713.JPGThere is an espresso bar where you can enjoy morning and afternoon tea in the bush setting.

Just between you and me having this much tea at your disposal makes for some obsessive tea making in the home vicinity (excluding me - I am not a huge tea fan). Yesterday my dad even brought me a cup when I kindly refused one - just in-case I changed my mind. I would say there are roughly 12 tea times per day, minimum :)

T2 has always been the tea of choice for Purist and my personal favourite when I do feel like one is Gorgeous Geisha. It is strawberry and cream flavoured green tea - yum!

IMG_5685.JPGI have always been obsessed with china and glass-wear ever since I was little. It is quite a strange obsession for a child to have but every time my mother and I went somewhere and I was allowed something I would always choose a glass or dish of some sort. I love the way Penny has displayed these cups and saucers.

Big Contrast

For Spring/Summer 2009 designers gave us a lesson in art -

Contrasting Colours 101: Colour Theory & The Colour Wheel.

What was learnt in summary?

Grey is in contrast with orange

Pink is in contrast with orange

Blue is in contrast with orange

Constrasting = Complementary

Lesson learnt.

John Galliano

Some believed with the current state of the world economy, Galliano pushed things a tad too far with his Marie Antoinette reference. On the other hand though, this collection was his most wearable to date. He may just have been influenced (like many of the designers supposedly were) by what they are calling the Great Depression of 2008. Yesterday's stock market free fall of 8% (the worst fall since 1987) doesn't make things look like the economy is going to get better anytime soon. All the more reason to escape into a realm of beautiful fashion and copious amounts of cake eating. Enjoy!

Under The Covers

A haze of grey was prominent in almost every designer showcase, smoking up the runways from Balenciaga to Yves Saint Laurent. The grey silk dress gave this sombre hue a lighter touch. The look is as though you have grabbed a sheet from the bed of your boudior and wrapped it around your flawless pale bod. At first glance you think, why can't I just MYO this dress? However it is important to understand the skilled craftmanship that goes into working this impossible fabric and creating its effortless fall.

Christopher Kane

I have always loved Christopher Kane since he arrived on the fashion circuit in Spring of 2007. When he did those little steel-capped denim booties last season I almost died. I finally bagged myself a similar pair by Jessie Hill at the end of winter this year only to ruin them on first wear by climbing a roof with my friend - after a notorious store opening. My philosophy of never letting fashion get in the way of fun became my downfall. However an SV girl would rather ruin her cutest pair of shoes than partake in the biggest fashion faux pas of all time - going shoeless (yes, even on top of a steel roof darling!)

For Spring/Summer 2009, Kane was inspired by the film Planet of The Apes, with which only he would be daring (and just crazy) enough to pull off.

DIY Voyeur Style

You may wonder after viewing all of this, how does any of it apply to you - a humble fashion follower living in the most isolated city in the world? Well all of these looks can be re-created in some way or other to suit you - if you are clever! (read fashion savvy.) Think outside the box, try places you wouldn't usually go to and get hunting yo!

If all else fails there is always Dillettante or net-a-porter and your dad's credit card right? If not take heed of SV's inexpensive DIY tips below:

Accessorize with tuelle as at Karl Lagerfeld and Vivienne Westwood. Re-create Bestsey Johnston's Tim Burton-esque look for under $100 or colour your world with a pair of tights that will knock your socks off.

00130m[2].jpg
 Karl Lagerfeld

Have 2 metres of tuelle in the colour of your choice cut to size and accessorize away. Wear it around your neck like a scarf, wind it through the sleeves of your favourite dress, wrap it over your hair to freak your boyfriend out into thinking you have dyed it a wacky colour or wear it like a shawl to add a touch of opulence for $5 or less.

Wasteland Exhibition

Ben Frichot Exhibition @ Wasteland - Sat 13.09.08

It is not often that it occurs, but very very rarely being slow pays off. I have taken forever to get this post out (a week in-fact), however I am so glad that I did indeed wait.

The first solo exhibition launch party showcasing Ben Frichot's artwork at Wasteland was last Saturday 13th September and today just before I attempted to release my coverage of it into the World Wide Web I came across a new picture. This picture is possibly one of the best and most hilarious fashion Faux Pas images in Perth hipster history. Upon browsing through my friend Bec's Facebook shots from the night I found one which includes two boys who at first glance appear to be wearing the same T-shirts. Awkward! At closer inspection, though you see that not only are the boys wearing the same exact T-shirt, they are in-fact both clad in exactly the same shoes - brand, style and colour, have the exact same jeans on - again same make, style and hue, yes they too have the same T-shirts on and oh yes both ensembles are closely followed by very similar over-coats to complete the look.

When I contacted my friend to ask permission to use the image, she informed me that the boys were not trying to make a statement against genetic cloning in 2008, she told me that - it was, actually, just one big fat accident! Oh the shame of it all! Like the ads first suggested when camera phones were released all those years ago, I too have my own suggestion for the boys. That they should follow this mantra from now on - Snap, Send and Assess - before leaving the home! Hahahahaha. Poor boys this is my worst nightmare!

*  *  *

King Street was lined with rad vintage cars and the kats and kittens in attendance were smoking hot and rocked all the way around the clock.

The epic body of work displayed by Frichot (art work that is) was impressive for a first time solo show and the speech he gave, including some heart felt words for his wife and the request that we all clap for her, appealed to the romantic in all of us.

The villains - bar staff that have become almost friends to me due to all of the events I have been attending of late. Funny!

IMG_3187 - Copy.JPG

I Absolutely love the masks - I have actually been looking for one like this for a long time, to no avail. I have no use for one at all of course, however I just want to own one. I suppose I should have asked my new waiter staff friends (who also served us all at The Kurv Fashion Bar during the festival). I think my fondness of them (the masks that is) started when Luella Bartly used similar ones in her Superhero collection show at New York fashion week. Her inspiration for the use of them was the movie Ghost World which features them worn by cult actress Thora Birch.

IMG_3188 - Copy.JPG

It was a night of similarities. Same clothes, similar faces. As soon as I saw this boy, Mathew Fox, I told him I thought he looked so much like Alex Delarge from Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange - and being faultless in my observations of such things (sorry it's a bit 'upity' but so true :-)  he said it wasn't the first time he had heard it. He then pulled the most brilliant facial impression of the character that I got shivers down my spine. Look below at the comparison - SCARY!

This gentleman is wearing his girlfriend's demented skunk fur. What a legend! NB: no demented skunks were harmed in the making of this wacky accessory.

IMG_3192.JPGRockabilly Madness - Creepers all round.

IMG_3191.JPG

Now I'm not sure if the cops knew that it was a 'Cops and Robbers' theme, however if they did, they certainly took the genre wayyyyy too seriously. It didn't look as though they were hired to be there so my theory is - by the look on the lady constable's face - they just wanted to feel like A-Listers for a moment and were obviously a bit sore from not receiving an invite in the letter box of their SHUs (security housing units).

The boys and their fateful fashion faux pas. So sorry guys but Style Voyeur cannot let this one go, it is important for the rest of us to know that such a nightmare is indeed a possibility in our world of mass production.

Ben Frichot said he tried to put as much 'positive vodoo' into each of his painitings as possible - to bring luck to their owners so I hope the boys each purchased one.

Peace and much rock until next time dames and greaser boys!
